Brief History of the Tucson Component
In the mid-1960's there was an Arizona State University School of Social Work presence in Tucson represented by the placement of field practicum Students in Tucson agencies. The first MSW courses, one or two a semester, were taught through Extension beginning in 1972. Then, under a Title XX Manpower Training and Development grant, the Tucson Component of the ASU School of Social Work was established in 1978 to offer the foundation year MSW curriculum for full and part-time students in Southern Arizona. Gradually, electives and concentration year coursework were added. Today Direct Practice MSW students may complete their professional degree entirely in Tucson. Planning, Administration, and Community Practice (PAC) students take 9 to 12 credits at the Downtown Phoenix Campus.

The Tucson BSW Program began in 1995 as a Title IV-E partnership between the Arizona State University/School of Social Work, Arizona Department of Economic Security, and the ASU College of Extended Education. Beginning as a pilot program to prepare students for employment in child welfare and generalist social work practice, the program became permanent in October 1999. DES recently renewed a grant with the Tucson BSW Program to provide tuition scholarships for students who agree to work in rural Arizona Child Protective Services positions upon graduation.

In January 2001, the Tucson Component moved to its new location at 340 N. Commerce Park Loop in the new Community Resource Center developed by United Way/City of Tucson. The social work program, located on the 2nd floor of the Tortolita Building, houses faculty and staff offices, three classrooms, one seminar room, and a student resource center, including a modest library, computers, and study space. The United Way/City of Tucson campus houses agencies and programs complimentary to the focus of the social work program. The campus provides access to a conference area (120 occupant capacity) equipped with a satellite downlink, and is located across the street from Pima Community College Community Campus and Northern Arizona University. The Tucson Component's current enrollment consists of 124 BSW students and 108 MSW students.
